How to Handle Screen Time with Kids
Hey there! As a nanny who's always keeping up with the latest research and techniques for child development, I feel it's essential to talk about the hot topic of screen time for our little ones. We all know that technology can be incredibly useful, but excessive screen time can actually have some negative effects on your child's development. Here are some tips to help you manage screen time and ensure a well-rounded childhood for your kiddo!
Set Some Limits
Establish boundaries around screen time to create a healthy balance.
Here’s what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:
0-18 months: Limit screentime to video chatting only
18-24 months: Educational programs only, with a caregiver
2-5 years: Less than 1 hour per day, and 3 hours per day on weekends
6+ years: Less than 2 hours per day, and 3 hours per day on weekends
By setting limits, you're encouraging your child to engage in other activities that contribute to their overall development.
Encourage Other Activities
Promote physical activity, social interaction, and creativity by encouraging your child to participate in various activities. Go outside, read a book, play some games, or dive into a crafts project together. These experiences not only help build essential skills but also create lasting memories.
Keep an Eye on Content
Ensure that the content your child is consuming is age-appropriate and teaches good values. Set up parental supervision on apps that your child uses and stay informed about what they're watching. By monitoring content, you're supporting their learning and growth in a positive direction.
Ask yourself:
Is it age-appropriate?
Is it educational?
Does it teach good values?
Does it actively engage my child?
Is my child benefiting from it?
No Screens Before Bedtime
Screens emit blue light, which can interfere with your little one's circadian rhythm and make it difficult for them to fall asleep. Using screens before bed can also lead to delayed bedtime & less sleep, lowered academic performance, increased risk of obesity, and decreased emotional regulation. Keep screens away for at least an hour before bedtime to help your child establish a healthy sleep pattern and sleep soundly through the night.
Be a Role Model
Your child learns by watching you, so show them healthy screen habits by limiting your own screen time and engaging in other activities with your child. Leading by example will help them understand the importance of a balanced lifestyle.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your child develops healthy screen habits and enjoys a well-rounded childhood. Remember, as a parent or caregiver, you have the power to shape their experiences and help them thrive. You got this!
